Glad Tidings?

It looks like nothing much

it sounds like nothing much

And yet you can’t get enough of it….

(Humane Power - Tao Te Ching)

Our most recent happening was sparked by images , metaphors and processes that have been emerging in our weekly classes. The current political debates, the polarization of people and constant talk of “ deep divisions” has led us to explore the possibilities that exist in the space between us.

Is there room to manoeuvre, might borders and edges provide possibility, is it possible to cross the great divide?

The space between in and around the opposites has been an interesting spatial, psycho-physical proposition and one which I have been encouraging the GG dancers to explore and embody each week.

As ever they do this with an openness and commitment to being in a process of enquiry which I continue to find inspiring and uplifting. GG are associated with the practice of possibility, adaptability and the potential for change. We wanted to gently, lightly , playfully suggest that what seems separate might find a way to come closer, might soften, fold in on itself-corners might meet.

So we offered a playful public provocation…..a moving meditation on bringing things together…..folding , enfolding , joining -a light touch intervention.

A GG mini ensemble gathered in Gateshead town centre. on an overcast grey day to offer a happening in which a public space might , for a short time be filled with……..

Something not easily defined . Something unnamed and unknown, Something other

A small call to remind ourselves that we can be open to a wider view, that we can bring the edges and the edginess together…..

Maybe…….

The images below show something of the tangible unease , mistrust and suspicion that can seem so prevalent in these strange and fractured times.

Who knew a group of people walking in unison and folding cloths could be so provocative?

Our gentle manoeuvres resulted in the mobilising of this group of men, our playful intervention becoming

an oeuvre d’art!

Meanwhile a man in a brown peaked cap engaged in a conversation ,offered to help, to hold and fold the space between. Beneath the watch of a glittering angel… our Carol and a herald of hope…….??
